Entire program of the riveting historic Italian Renaissance games (field-produced by Idanna and Terence) take place each summer across Tuscany. In Florence, il Calcio Storico or “Historic Football” celebrates the last heroic hours of the Florentine Republic and is battled out every summer on June 24, the day of the Patron St. John the Baptist, in Piazza Santa Croce. This violent game is the forerunner of rugby and soccer. North of Tuscany, in the city of Faenza, the Palio di Nabulo or “Jousting Match of the Nabulo” tests riders’ horsemanship and fighting abilities. Finally, in the medieval city of Pisa, Gioco del Ponte or Battle of the Bridge pits the four quarters of the city in this grueling match of strength above the ever-flowing Arno River.
